Categorizing your business in Google is important and easy
Hello. My name is Francesca. Thanks so much for joining me today as we review why it’s important to select business categories on Google My Business and how easy it is to do it.
I have found that selecting specific business categories on Google My Business is often an overlooked tactic. According to Moz, proper Google My Business categories are ranked third out of 50 for search ranking factors for local PACS.
It’s important that you select the proper categories when setting this up as it is one of the most important factors that will make your business appear in relevant search results. In both, the local pack and Google map search are wondering how to do this. It’s actually really easy. So setting it up should be a no-brainer.
Choosing primary and additional categories in GMB
If you’re creating a brand-new Google My Business listing, one of the first things Google will ask you to do is to choose a primary category. If you already have a Google my business page, you’ll find your categories by clicking on the info tab in the left menu and looking right below your business name, where the pencil icon will let you edit your categories. You are allowed to select up to 10 categories, but I’d recommend sticking with a primary category. And then one to three additional categories only if there are additional options that make sense.
Importance of the primary category
Your primary category is believed to have the greatest influence on your local rankings. And for that reason should be chosen with extra care.
Edit your GMB business category with care
You can edit your business categories anytime you’d like in your Google My Business dashboard, but please understand that any edit to business categories can have a direct influence on your ranking factors for various search phrases. So if you’re going to make an edit, please do so with care.
Thank you so much for joining me today.
