Being outranked by your competitors in Google is brutal. It means that the traffic for potential customers who are searching for your business type, your products, your services, if you’re ranking lower, it means that that business is going to your competitors. And it’s frustrating because sometimes we just don’t understand why that is, right? You have a great business too. So why are your competitors outranking you in the eyes of Google for the services, products, business type that you offer? Today, I’m going to show you how to generate a report that’s going to tell you exactly why your competitors are outranking you and give you ideas about what you can do about it.
Okay? So this is a local search grid report that’s generated using Bright Local. I’ll put the link below. For Bright Local, you can just pay a really small fee or even use the free trial just to generate this report for yourself. But basically what it tells you, it tells you the search results here, but right below this report, and if you’re interested in generating this or how to do it, I have other videos, just check ’em out. They show you how to generate the local search grid reports using Bright Local, but contained in the report is really valuable information about your ranking versus that of your competitors. And it does so in the context of every specific keyword that you might want to look at. So let’s just say we’ll start with hardwood Lumber near me. So this was a report for a lumberyard. Now they’re doing pretty well for this, and you can see in here the competitors that also rank for this.
And you can also see where those competitors are located. Now, Google has a few different criteria that they use. They’re looking at proximity, relevance of the search that happened, and then what they deemed to be the authority or relevance or prominence of your business as well. So you can see for this one, it’s no surprise that we’re number two. See, we have more links, and you can hover over this to see what this means, but there’s more links to our business than theirs. So okay, we should be higher, right? But not necessarily they have more authority in the eyes of Google, which means they have more credibility, so to speak right now, which helps them rank. So they’ve got a 27, we’ve only got a 25, and then reviews. So this is why you’ve seen on my channel, I talk about getting as many reviews and consistent reviews because reviews matter to Google too.
So you can see that they have more reviews, which they’re probably also getting reviews more consistently, so they have more reviews and they have a higher authority. We have more links, which is good, but they’re two out of three. And here’s three out of four. You can see that they have a 4.5 star rating, and we only have a 4.3 star rating. So when you tie all those together, you understand why they rank number one, and we don’t. So what should we do about it? If we want to improve our business’s ranking for hardwood lumber searches near me, if we want to do that, we’ve got to look at ways to boost our authority. And so I’ll make more videos on that. Check ’em out on this channel about how to boost your website’s authority. You could get more links, but we’re already winning there.
So it’s not necessarily where I’d focus. I’d focus right here on getting more reviews and getting them from our best customers. So you can’t ask for a positive review, and that’s against Google’s terms of service. But you can go to your best, who really like you and ask them for reviews, understanding they’re probably going to give you a five star review, and you can ask them on a consistent basis to try and get not only more reviews than Austin hardwoods of Denver has, but also if you get a bunch of five star reviews, maybe you can edge yourself up to a 4.6, in which case you’re going to have higher rating, more reviews, more links, and you’ll only be losing by two points on authority. So this report is really invaluable. It gives you exactly the information for each keyword that you hope to rank for what your competitors are doing differently.
That’s helping them rank above you for those specific things, right? And then that’s not the be all end all. SS e o is complicated. So if you do see that you’re beating somebody here, look at the graphic node and see where you’re located relative to them. That’s also why this map is included, because like I said, proximity matters. So to Google who’s actually closer to the person searching, that’s going to give them a boost. And then relevance. So if Google doesn’t understand what that means is relevance. If Google doesn’t understand that you’re relevant for that search or it’s not exactly sure, you don’t have the right keywords on your Google business profile on your website, even though you may have better authority and link and reviews, if Google isn’t sure if you sell that product or offer that product or service, then Google still may not bring you up ahead of that competitor.
So see my other videos about adding keywords to your Google business profile that could play into it. And then prominence is these factors. Prominence is the third category, which is like how prominent is your business? And Google uses this information to understand how prominent your business is. So hope that helps. That gives you a sense of why your competitors may be ranking higher than you, and how you can understand what that may be, and then what steps you can take or what things you need to work on and improve to fix that.
