The answer to this question depends a lot on the type of business you own and what your goal is for ecommerce. If you’re new to ecommerce, remember that there are a lot of different ways that it can be set up. If you have yours set up already, then let’s dive into the best types of products to sell online.
Regionally Available Products
If your store sells a product that is typically only found in a regional market, that can be a tremendous product for online sales. Let’s highlight this type of product with a very specific example. In many coastal cities through the United States you’ll find beach, or coastal living style brick and mortar stores. These stores often sell products that are manufactured locally using things like beach wood, sea shells, palm trees or other materials only found in coastal areas. One example of a product that might be purchased at one of these stores might be a candle made with seashells. In places like Wisconsin, Nebraska or Missouri it is not necessarily easy to find a store near you to buy a sea shell candle. Do you carry products of that nature in your store? Products that can typically only be found in brick and mortar stores in a specific region? If so, that product may have potential to sell online, because people can’t find that item in their area.
Heavy or Messy Items
This type of item will sell best when you have an ecommerce website that caters to your delivery service for your customers. If you sell items such as hay, feed, building materials, mulch or garden soil, these might sell very well on an ecommerce website geared towards allowing people to schedule their local deliveries online. The reason these types of products sell very well is because they are difficult to transport and inconvenient to pick up. Therefore, customers often find it more convenient to order these products from a website and have them delivered to their doorstep. So if you are doing local delivery, add the products that people wouldn’t have the means to easily pick up on their own!
Products You Make
If you manufacture your own product, or you have a specific product that only you sell, then you are poised to do well selling that product online. Ecommerce is a very competitive space, as such, it is a huge advantage to be a first mover in selling a specific product or in being the sole source of a specific product online.
Evaluate the products in your store and ask yourself why people buy a specific product from you. Is it because you have it in the local store? If that is the answer, then chances are that you might have some trouble selling that product online. However, if your answers look something like this…
Why do people buy this product from me?
Because I deliver it to them.
Because I make it myself.
Because I am one of the only people who sell it in the country.
Because its unique to this area.
… then you may have yourself a good product for online sales.
